From Storytelling
to Storyselling

Hot Type Founder and CEO Gabrielle Hart got her start in storytelling as a journalist.

She quickly become a subject matter expert on whatever topic landed on her desk, asking sharp questions, listening for the gold and shaping it into stories that resonated. She also honed the art of shifting tone to speak to different audiences — a skill that would prove just as valuable outside the newsroom.

Within a few years, she helped launch a Tribune Corporation-owned alt-weekly and wrote nationally syndicated features and front-page stories for its parent daily newspaper.

Covering arts, entertainment and lifestyle, Gabrielle realized she was already doing something adjacent to copywriting — just for a different audience. So she made the leap from storytelling to storyselling.

She cut her marketing teeth at MySpace (back when it was the social network), where she was the sole copywriter for the world’s most-visited website. There, she created sales materials that helped land multimillion-dollar sponsorships from brands like Procter & Gamble, Hewlett Packard and McDonald’s.

Along the way, Gabrielle saw a gap: most companies need high-quality positioning and messaging, but not all need — or can support — a full-time writer or in-house content team. So in 2009, she launched Hot Type, a consultancy built to deliver agency-level work with more flexibility and a personal touch. The name? A nod to her newspaper roots.

Hot Type launched in 2009 and has grown through 100% repeat business and referrals.

Since then, Hot Type has helped emerging brands launch and grow, and supported enterprise companies in refining their positioning and performance. We bring a journalist’s mindset and a marketer’s instinct to everything we write.

But the work we’re proudest of? The relationships we’ve built. Many of our clients have been with us for years, and that kind of trust — and ongoing collaboration — is what drives us.

Our average client relationship is 3.6 years — 12% higher than the industry average.

Today, Hot Type is a team of brand, marketing, copywriting, UX and design pros who are equal parts strategic and creative — and always up for a good idea.
